Former NM First lady and AIO Advisor Alice King dies at 78

ALBUQUERQUE — Former New Mexico first lady Alice King, a well respected children and families advocate passed away Sunday evening, after suffering a stroke.
Known for her ardent support of children and families, Alice King was a leader in reforming social program throughout the last 30 years. The former first lady led the Governor's Task Force on Youth and Families and headed efforts that created the state's Children, Youth and Families Department and the New Mexico Girls Ranch. She was among the first advisors of Americans for Indian Opportunity’s (AIO) Ambassador Program, and participated in the initial gathering of the advisors.

"AIO recognizes the wonderful work Alice did for all of the children of New Mexico,” LaDonna Harris, AIO’s founder and President said.  “Her commitment to the families of our state will be remembered through the lasting legacy of her efforts.”

As an original advisor to the AIO Ambassadors Program, she helped shape the curriculum of the program.  Her contributions to AIO continued throughout the years, and she remains an important part of the establishment of the Ambassadors Program.

"This is a sad day for all New Mexicans because we lost a true friend in Alice King," New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson said. "Alice's impact on the state she loved will always be felt, particularly for the vulnerable children who are better off as a result of her compassion and tireless advocacy."

The Governor has ordered flags be flown at half-staff. Her body will lie in state in the Capitol rotunda on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A funeral service will be held Thursday at 9 a.m. at the Moriarty High School gymnasium and burial will follow at the Stanley cemetery. The family requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Carrie Tingley Hospital at the University of New Mexico, the New Mexico Children's Foundation or the New Mexico Girls Ranch.  More Details»
