LaDonna Harris Awarded Honorary Degree

Americans for Indian Opportunity (AIO) founder and President, LaDonna Harris (Comanche) was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters at the commencement exercises of California University of Pennsylvania.

The event held May 20, 2009, celebrated the graduating students of the institution and those accomplished leaders who have contributed to the enrichment of the university. “It is an honor to be recognized by such an outstanding institution. I hope to use my degree in a way that honors the values that I share with Cal U.” Harris reflected.

Harris was recognized for her 50 years of activism and advocacy for American Indians and other underrepresented populations. She is the head of the 39 year-old organization, AIO and the first Native American woman to become a vice presidential nominee (1980), Harris has devoted her life to building coalitions that create change.

Harris’ relationship with the institution began in 2007 when she visited as a lecturer and participated in the dedication of the campus’ multicultural center. She has since forged a close relationship with the university and advises them on issues of inclusion. Harris said, “This is the kind of educational experience my colleagues and I dreamed about, one that celebrates diversity and utilizes cultural values.”

Weaving an international Indigenous network AIO catalyzes and facilitates culturally appropriate initiatives and opportunities that enrich the cultural, political and economic lives of Indigenous peoples. AIO will be establishing a fund to honor Harris’ recent degree. For more information call 505-842-8677 or send an email to aio@aio.org.
