Rosalyn Lapier (Blackfeet) ‘93 comments on new books by and about the AIO family:

Coyote Warrior: One Man, Three Tribes, and the Trial That Forged a Nation by Paul VanDevelder

Coyote Warrior features the Cross family, including Phyllis Old Dog Cross (AIO Board) - this is one of the best books I have read in a long time about Indian history and policy. It is about the Garrison Dam in North Dakota and the flooding of the homelands of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara. It is a heart-breaking and heroic story. It is written by a journalist, so it has an easy style, yet includes very complicated policy discussions. Everyone should read it.

Meet Mindy by Susan Secakuku (Hopi) ‘98

Susan wrote a marvelous book about the Hopi and the life of a fourteen-year old Hopi girl. It is a great overview of a tribe with history and a taste of today's world. It has lots of full color photographs and text. It is written for the junior high level but would be enjoyed by anyone. It is great book, especially if you have children.
