Language Survey
Americans for Indian Opportunity (AIO) with the guidance of the Advisory and Collaborators Committees developed a survey to determine the Comanche language skills status of Comanches living in the Albuquerque and Santa Fe area and compiled a mailing list of Comanches living in New Mexico.
It is estimated that 5,000 enrolled citizens of the Comanche Nation live away from the traditional Comanche land base in Oklahoma, and that 300 live in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico. AIO requested a list of Comanches living in New Mexico from the Comanche Nation tribal government. Oklahomans for Indian Opportunity (OIO) who has done a language program, assisted AIO in securing a list. AIO received a list of 150 households.
Using the mailing list provided by the tribe, AIO used a simple survey methodology to send out a survey that included a return envelope with a stamp. Over 40 of the surveys were returned due to incorrect addresses. Successful return of the surveys with correct addresses was 38%. We continue to receive new Comanche names in New Mexico from other Comanches.
The results show that language revitalization and a solid plan for a language and culture program for this community are necessary. Encouraged by the comments received on the surveys, it is obvious that there is both need and desire for a language program. As one respondent said, “I am ecstatic that I may have the opportunity to learn and reclaim my heritage.”
